My work is rooted in the way we use communication to navigate relationships. I’m interested in how our understanding and participation of this is becoming more obscured and interpretive with the ever growing vocabulary of today’s pop culture, political landscape, and the introduction of internet-based acronyms to the popular fold.
The drawings are created based on a set of restraints and working from within these self set boundaries. The forms are built through letters, words and phrases, and the palette is contained to a monochromatic scheme. These limitations allow for my decisions as an artist to appear ambiguous as the piece unfolds. Further blurring the lines of what language is and how it is interpreted as a group and by individuals.
The sculptural work is a more direct representation of “mixed messages”. I construct these pieces by pulling from our expanding catalog of text acronyms, as well as words and phrases within the “public domain”. This sets a stage that encourages viewers to bring their own vocabulary in to the brackish waters of contemporary communication.
